Bridging the bench and boardroom: Rethinking innovation in aggressive breast cancer

Coinciding with National Science Week podcast, Andrew Parry, Associate Director of Global Medical Strategy & Operations at Gilead Sciences and Dr Aeson Chang, Researcher & Lecturer in Drug Discovery Biology at Monash University, explore the intersection of cutting-edge research and global medical strategy.
Dr Chang shares insights from his work in aggressive breast cancer, a project that has earned him one of only three global grants within the 2025 Gilead Sciences Research Scholars Program. Parry provides perspective on the program’s 15-year journey, which has funded over 260 researchers worldwide, addressing gaps that traditional funding mechanisms often overlook.
Together, they confront one of medicine’s most stubborn realities: the lack of incentives for repurposing existing drugs to meet urgent, unmet clinical needs. They examine the policy and system barriers that keep promising treatments out of reach, and why innovation isn’t just about new molecules, it’s about new ways of thinking.
The due examine what “success” really means when translating research into tangible outcomes, and the key trends that will drive substantial transformations in research to better meet the needs and expectations of patients.
